At Aughton Junior Academy we aim to enable all KS2 pupils to experience learning and using a modern foreign language in a way that is enjoyable and fun.

Intent

Our Spanish curriculum stimulates and encourages children’s curiosity about language, broadens their cultural awareness (including exposure to authentic songs and literary texts) and develops the self-esteem of pupils through experiencing success in learning a new language. The curriculum has been designed by specialist teachers.

All KS2 classes receive 30 minutes of foreign language teaching each week delivered by their class teacher, beginning in Y3 with an introduction to Spanish phonics and basic grammar through a range of contexts and topics. They learn that language has structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another, but that languages also have links between each other. Over the course of four years, the children develop the four foreign language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. 

Implementation

Key stage 2 teachers teach Spanish as a subject for 30 minutes each week. It begins in Y3 as their first exposure to the language by focussing on the basic grammar and an introduction into Spanish phonics through a rage of contexts and topics. Throughout the four years journey the children are taught these skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The Spanish teaching slides have been designed by a specialist within the academy trust, each lesson has a bespoke set of slides linking to the lesson objective. Alongside the slides children have a work booklet to complete activities linked with the lesson objective. The lessons are planned with progression in mind throughout the four-year learning journey, to build on previous knowledge from units already studied, and also as a stepping stone into the beginning of secondary school.

Although we do not teach discrete lessons for our FS2 and KS1 pupils, we introduce greetings and basic phrases with our younger children and immerse them in the language prior to beginning discrete language lessons in KS2. 

Assessment

Spanish assessment will take into consideration the 4 key skills – Listening (L), Speaking (S), reading (R) and writing (W). Class teachers will use the assessment tracker from the long term plan and medium term plan to show if a child is meeting the expected standard within Spanish.

Impact

By the end of KS2, we want pupils to be able to;

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, find ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

We want to build the foundations to support the study of modern languages when our pupils tranisition to the next stage of their learning journey at key stage 3.

Spanish Enrichment Day - Bringing the Curriculum to Life

During the Spanish Enrichment day, the pupils spent time with Carmen, who is a native Spanish speaker, who worked with every class in the academy to share the culture of Spain, teach basic phrases and give the pupils the opportunity to sing Spanish songs and rhymes and try traditional dance culture. 

The children had a fantastic day bringing their Spanish learning to life!
